GUIDELINES FOR THE AWARD OF THE
WILLIAM KARL SCHWARZE
SCHOLARSHIP IN MATHEMATICS
1. This award, having a monetary value of $10,000, will be presented annually to one or more graduate students in Mathematics who have demonstrated outstanding mathematical scholarship and exceptional promise of making a strong professional contribution as a mathematics teacher and educator at the precollege or undergraduate college level.
2. The purpose of the award is to recruit and retain outstanding students in mathematics with these qualifications.
3. The scholarship will be assigned to in-residence students whom the Department has had the opportunity to observe and who have the qualifications required for this award.
4. Any graduate student of outstanding academic ability who has also exhibited exceptional promise as a teacher and educator, is eligible to receive a scholarship.
5. This award may be applied as early as the summer following the receipt of the scholarship, but must include, at a minimum, one quarter of the following academic year. Therefore, a recipient of this scholarship must register as a full-time graduate student for at least one quarter during the academic year following the award. Alternatively, it would be acceptable if the recipient wishes to be part-time (per Graduate Studies guidelines) for three quarters instead of full-time for one quarter.
6. An annual call for nominations will be made by the Mathematics Department each year to obtain candidates for the award the following academic year. This call will be distributed to all members of the Department of Mathematics, all graduate students in the Department, and appropriate undergraduate students in mathematics.
7. Nominations for candidates will be submitted to the Vice-Chair for Graduate Affairs of the Department by a date specified in the call.
8. The Faculty Representative Committee (FRC) will annually appoint the Departmental Awards Committee whose responsibility will include selecting a recipient(s) for the William Karl Schwarze Scholarship in Mathematics each year. This Committee will receive the nominations and make its recommendations to the Graduate Program Committee.
9. The Graduate Program Committee shall communicate its recommendation to Graduate Studies and notify the candidate during the Department’s annual awards ceremony.
