Research
Joseph Biello is interested in
PDEs and asymptotics for geophysical fluid dynamics. He combines
asymptotic analysis for PDEs along with physical intuition and small scale numerics to develop and solve models related to geophysical phenomena. Dr. Biello is also interested in using asymptotic techniques to develop more efficient numerical methods for large numerical simulations. Currently, he is working on problems related to large scale waves in the tropical atmosphere. Working with A. Majda, he has developed a non-linear theory for the
Madden-Julian Oscillation, which is a large scale wave of organized convective activity occurring in the tropics.
