For Graduate Students

Innovative mentoring of our graduate students is the key motive of VIGRE at UC Davis. We also want to stimulate students to be creative and to participate in the daily academic activities of our Department.

  • Fellowships and Academic Mentoring: VIGRE sponsors annual and quarterly graduate fellowships as well as a wide range of seminars, minicourses and miniconferences in the form of research focus groups. In addition, we support the activities of several student-run seminars.

  • Minigrant Funding: Do you want organize a workshop? Is there an exciting speaker you wish to invite for a minicourse? The VIGRE program invites all graduate students who have an exciting scholarly idea to apply for a mini-grant to make that happen. Examples of activities initiated by our students include Explore Math, SIAM graduate club, and the Combinatorics, Discrete Math and Topology conferences. Contact Prof. Jesus De Loera (deloera@math.ucdavis.edu) for details.

  • Travel: Do you wish to attend a conference? Travel funds are available to graduate and undergraduate VIGRE participants to attend conferences to present their research. Undergraduate students, please contact the undergraduate research adviser. Graduate students, please read the application guidelines and complete the online application form.

  • Summer Fellowships: Summer is a great time to do research. VIGRE can help with that by providing special Summer fellowships to the best written research projects. Graduate students will need to fill out the application for VIGRE Summer Fellowship (PDF) and provide a research proposal.

  • Graduate Exams: Summer is also a good time to prepare for graduate exams. The VIGRE program promoted the creation of Prelim Exam Summer Workshops. It is a great opportunity for those students preparing for the Algebra and Analysis exams.
