PREREQUISITES

21B. It's not that we'll be doing much calculus, but it helps to have seen a proof or two before diving into 108.

A Transition to Advanced Mathematics by Smith, Eggen, and St. Andre.

ATTENDANCE

Regular attendance is strongly encouraged. Note: whether you are present or not, you will be responsible for any information distributed in class.

GRADING

Your course grade will be determined according to this scale:
Homework 20%
Midterm 1 20%
Midterm 2 20%
Final Exam 40%

HOMEWORK

Homework in this class will involve regular assignments and perhaps something else. More details on this later.

Homework in Math 108 is not like homework in other classes. Previous math classes may have been primarily computational, in the sense that the thing you compute is your answer. Math 108 is very different: you will frequently be given the answer, and then be asked to prove the correctness of that answer. It would be completely reasonable for you to turn in several paragraphs on a typical homework assignment. Your task is like that of an attorney who is trying to win over a perfectly skeptical jury. Well, maybe not at first, but that's where we're going.

Please follow these guidelines when preparing homework papers for submission:

EXAMS

We will have two midterms and a comprehensive final for this class. Bring a pencil, an eraser, photo ID, and your well-rested mind to the exams. Calculators, books, notes, and communication with your neighbors or the outside world are not allowed.

OFFICE HOURS

My office hours are MWF 4:10-5:00, and by appointment. It's easy to make an appointment: just email me, and we'll find a mutually acceptible time.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

To gain a clear understanding of material as quickly as possible, read the book carefully. Most of all, PRACTICE.
