PREREQUISITES
Two years high school algebra, plane geometry, plane trigonometry; and a score of at least 25 on the Precalculus Qualifying
Examination. The exam will be given in Chem 194 on Monday, January 3 at 2:00 pm, and again on Saturday, January 8 at 10:00 am (same
place). I don't believe late arrivals are admitted to the test.
Students who do not meet this requirement will be automatically dropped from this course. For more information, visit

TEXT
Precalculus--A Problems-Oriented Approach, Cohen. (You may use Cohen's Precalculus, 5th edition, if you prefer.) The fourth
edition has different problem sets, but is otherwise the same as far as our class is concerned.
ATTENDANCE
Regular attendance is strongly encouraged. Note: whether you are present or not, you will be responsible for any information
distributed in class.
GRADING
Your course grade will be determined according to the better of these two scales:
| Homework | 20% |
| Midterm 1 | 20% |
| Midterm 2 | 20% |
| Final Exam | 40% |
| Midterm 1 | 25% |
| Midterm 2 | 25% |
| Final Exam | 50% |
HOMEWORK
Please follow these guidelines when preparing homework papers for submission:
- Discuss the assignment with classmates all you like, but submit your own written work. DO NOT COPY solutions from any source.
- Write ledgibly, or type.
- Staple multiple-page assignments (please no tape or clever folding/tearing routines!).
- Fold assignments ``the long way'' with your work on the inside.
- CLEARLY PRINT your name, your student ID number, the due date, assignment number, and ``Math 12'' on the
outside. By ``outside'', I mean where a person could see this information without opening the paper.
EXAMS
We will have two midterms and a comprehensive final (emphasizing later material) for this class. Bring a pencil, an eraser, photo ID,
and your well-rested mind to the exams. Calculators, books, notes, and communication with your neighbors are not allowed.
OFFICE HOURS
My office hours are MWF 3:10-4:00, and by appointment. It's easy to make an appointment: just email me, and we'll find a mutually
acceptible time.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
To gain a clear understanding of material as quickly as possible, read the book carefully. Most of all, PRACTICE.
Do as many book problems as it takes, assigned or not. A very useful skill is to build similar problems for yourself.
Find some course extras at http://my.ucdavis.edu. Several things, including grades, will be
available there. If you cannot access MyUCDavis, please contact me for assistance.
