Before I joined UC Davis, I was a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff in the Computing Sciences Research Center at Bell Laboratories, which is now part of Alcatel-Lucent.
Most of the technical reports I wrote while I was at Bell Laboratories are still available via my Bell Labs homepage.
Andreas and Alexander are members of the
Development Squad of the Davis Bike Club Junior Race Team.
Andreas' race results, race reports, and more can be
found here.
Cycling is and has always been an important part of my life.
One of my personal bests is 200 miles in 9 hours 53 minutes
(ridden at the 2006 Davis Double Century on May 20, 2006).
In 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2005, I did the
Mount
Washington bicycle hillclimb (7.6 miles, 4700 feet of
vertical gain).
My best time for this climb is 1:11:08, which in
the 2002 race was good enough for 2nd place in the 45-49
age group; some pictures from my 2002 ride.
The Devil Mountain Double Century has 18,800 feet of elevation gain;
see the
elevation chart.
This is probably the most climbing I have done in one day;
results
of the 2005 edition.
Another one of my favorite rides with lots of climbing
is the Hillier Than Thou Century;

of the 2001 race;

of the 2002 race;

of the 2003 race.
Lately, I have tried to work a little on my time-trialing skills;
as a result, my personal best time for the flat
10-mile Wheelworks/Mad Cow Wednesday Night Time Trials
is now down to 22:19, and as a 2-person team time trial with my son Andreas,
our best time is down to 22:03.
