Purpose of this document

One of the problems faced by the calculus instructor is maintaining the student's attention throughout a series of lectures in which a vast range of material is covered. In this document we list a series of experiments, demonstrations, amusing analogies and anecdotes which can be used in a calculus class and are intended to:

1.
Illustrate a concept.
2.
Entertain, so that the student enjoys the lecture.
3.
Show the connection of the material to real world applications.

There are only a few examples given here but I hope to compile an extensive list. If you have suggestions for additions, please pass them on to me. I will distribute an updated list periodically to anyone who is interested. After enough examples are developed, it could become possible to include one or more demonstration in every lecture.
