Course Description: The prerequisites for this course are 16B or 21B, or equivalent. The material covered includes differential equations, partial derivatives, double integrals, series, and applications. The sections covered from the text will be: C.1–C.4 (in the appendices), 7.1-7.6, 7.8, 7.9, and 10.1-10.6. If you did not do well in 16B or 21B you should strongly consider retaking that class rather than continuing on to 16C. Most of the material covered in this course is a continuation of the material taught in those courses.
Midterms: There will be three midterms (dates to be announced). The lowest midterm will be dropped. The first midterm will be before the drop deadline (April 26th) so you will have a chance to evaluate how you are doing in the class. These exams are closed book, closed notes, no calculator, and according to the Code of Academic Conduct. Please bring a photo ID and sign in for each exam. You must show your work neatly and legibly in order to receive credit.
There will be no make-up midterms, for absolutely no reason what so ever.
Student Disabilities: If you have a disability of some kind which requires accomodation, make sure you talk to the Student Disability Center as soon as possible. Please talk to me as well.
Homework: Expect a homework assignment basically every class period, due in the next class meeting. Late homework will not be accepted! No exceptions. The lowest score will be dropped though. You are welcome (encouraged!) to discuss your homework assignments with other students in the class. HOWEVER please make sure the final write-up is done on your own. The assignments will be posted here daily.
All homework should be stapled in the upper left-hand corner. Please write your name, your student ID number, and the assignment number in the upper right-hand corner of the top page. Illegible or unstapled homework may be refused at the discretion of the grader. Find your homework grades at my.ucdavis.edu. If you turned in your homework, but have a zero recorded in my.ucdavis, you have until the end of the week homework is returned to register a complaint.
You are encouraged to work in the calculus lab, MSB 3118, which is open M-F 11AM-6PM. There are always TA's there available and willing to help.
Calculator Policy: No calculators are required for this course. An inexpensive scientific calculator may be helpful for many of the homework problems, and occasional problems (probably less than 10%) may require the use of graphing capabilities. There are math graphing programs on lab computers that may help with these problems if you don't want to purchase a graphing calculator. Don't forget that Windows has a built-in scientific calculator. No calculators will be allowed, or necessary, on exams.
Attendance and Participation: Regular attendance to the lectures is strongly advised. You will be responsible for any material presented in class, whether or not you are present. This includes announcements, assignments, and of course, midterms. The best strategy for success in this and any math course is to keep up with the material. Don't let yourself get behind! Your textbook is a valuable resource--read it! Look over new sections before we cover them in class, and study them again more closely after the lecture. Not only is class time too limited to cover all of the examples, explanations, and hints found in the text, but the text can also provide a helpful second perspective on the same material. In addition review class notes regularly. If you need assistance you are encouraged to go to the calculus lab or come visit me during office hours.
Last Day to Drop:
Wednesday, April 26th.
If you want to drop the class after this deadline, you will need to get
a PTD (permission to drop) number from your Dean's office.
Grading: Your grade in this course will be computed according to the following scheme:
| Homework |
20% |
| Midterm1 |
20% |
| Midterm2 |
20% |
| Final Exam |
40% |
