1. Midterm
is this coming Friday. Did you start studying this past
weekend? Here are some ideas to get the ball rolling. I
would work from the top down (priority on lower numbers)
i. Work to solve every one of the challenge
problems by Thursday before section (3-7 hours required study)
ii. Write a study list (in your own hand
writing) that includes all the theorems and definitions needed (3-5
hours... see Midterm
1: Major Concepts for help organizing)
a. the first draft: write
all the theorems down (with relevant examples from the problems you
solved)
b. second draft: imagine
writing a cheat sheet with only the information you want to remember
(not the words so much as the ideas/ formula)
iii. Print out a list of all the Webwork
assignments... focus on the ones that you had trouble solving
iv. Get help:
a. Come
to section with specific questions (email me before hand and I will
come to section with well planned solutions)
b. Come to
office hours on Friday
Motivation and Preparation: What will early preparation help you
achieve? How much time do you have? Here are my
calculations: You have 4 days * 24 hours + 3 hours = 99 hours of
time on your hands from now until Friday... assuming 8 hours a sleep
each night, you have 67 waking hours.
Can you make it a priority
to dedicate 10-18 of those hours directly towards studying for this
test. Find a quite, comfortable, well lit corner of the library
(or any other private space) matering the material! Can you make
the time and take the energy necessary to achieve success in this
class? How will putting in this time help you in your
future? How is making priorities, being organized and focusing on
a specific set of ideas helpful for your future career interests?
Positive Affirmations: You can do this. You have the skill,
the talent and the ability. You are bright and can get
support. Ganbatte kudasai (Japanese for good luck!).
Thursday January 14, 2010 3:40pm
1. Bring You books for todays section. We will work on the
following assignment:
Section 11.4 (p.765): #25, 38, 40
Section 11.5 (p.770): #3, 37, 45
2. We will have a problem solving section from 6:15 - 7:00pm
in MSB (today I must leave at 7pm sharp). We can solve problems
from
challenge list and discuss techniques that will help for the Webworks
assignement.
3. Office hours are tomorrow at 12:30pm. Please come by
for an interesting math discussion and support!
4. We will have a section email list by next Monday.
Keep your eyes open for this
