Matt Herman's Mad Funk Project

In October 2008 I put together a band called Matt Herman's Mad Funk Project which consists of an extremely talented crew of musicians: David Kyle on keyboard, Tanya Mendoza on saxophone, and Darren Virassammy on bass guitar.

Our first show was at Sophia's Thai Kitchen on October 9, 2008. We played on the outside covered deck to a packed house. By the time we hit the stage at 11 pm it was a chilly 45-50 degrees Farenheit! Luckily, the stage lights kept us warm. Our set consisted primarily of covers of jazz standards. We only had time to rehearse twice before the gig, so there was a lot of listening, improvising, adjusting to unexpected changes, and creative, unplanned song-endings!

Here are some MP3 audio files and photos from the gig. The show was recorded live with a stereo microphone on a MiniDisc. The microphone was located at the back of the deck, so the recordings contain a great deal of crowd noise.

Our next show (and probably the last one before I leave Davis) will again be at Sophia's on Thursday, June 25, 2009.
