MAT 145 - COMBINATORICS Homework Assignment

Every week 10 homework problems are assigned. They are due in class every Friday.
- Print clearly (1) your
full name; (2) student ID number; (3) the course number
(MAT 145); and (4) the due date; at the
top right corner of the front page of your homework paper.
- Please staple
your homework if you use more than one sheet of
paper.
- Every solution to a
problem
has to be presented with a proof. The final answer alone
without any proof will not receive
any credit.

Only a perfect solution with proof receives a credit.
No partial credit will be given.
Weekly Homework Assignment:
HW#8: Due Wednesday June 4. Section 11.8 (page 463): #12, 20, 21, 27, 28, 36, 39, 47, 56, 57.
Please read sections 11.1 through 11.5.
Extra Office Hours for the week of June 2: Monday June 2 = 12:10 - 2:00; Tuesday June 3 = 4:10 - 5:00. Regular office hours are also offered.
There is no homework due May 23. Please review the past homework problems from 4.5, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3, 7.1, 7.4, 7.6 and 8.1.
HW#7: Due Friday May 16. Section 7.8 (page 245): #1, 2, 4, 23, 27, 31; Section 8.5 (page 290): #1, 2, 3, 4.
Please read sections 7.1, 7.4, 7.6 and 8.1.
HW#6: Due Friday May 9. Section 6.6 (page 185): #2, 3, 7, 9, 11, 12, 14, 16, 20, 21.
Please read sections 6.1, 6.2 and 6.3.
HW#5: Due Friday May 2. Section 4.6 (page 116): #36, 37, 38, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47.
Please read section 4.5. The Problem #47 has a typo: in the explanation of the partial order, the sentence in the parenthesis should read "(thus the partition pi can be obtained by partitioning the parts of sigma)."
HW#4: Due Friday April 25. Section 2.4 (page 41): #9, 19; Section 3.6 (page 75): #4, 6, 14, 37; Section 5.8 (152 pages): #12, 13, 41, 42.
These problems are meant to be Review Problems. The first midterm covers Sections 2.1, 2.2, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4, 3.5, 5,1, 5.2, 5.3, and 5.6.
HW#3: Due Friday April 18. Section 5.8 (page 152): #3, 7, 10, 11, 18, 19, 20, 23, 25, 26.
Please read sections 5.1 through 5.3. We skip Chapter 4 for now because it is long and heavy. We come back to Section 4.5 after the first midterm.
HW#2: Due Friday April 11. Section 3.6 (page 75): #3, 5, 7, 8, 15, 17, 20, 26, 31, 32.
Please read sections 3.1 through 3.5.
HW#1: Due Friday April 4. Section 2.4 (page 41): #4, 5, 8, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 27.
Please read sections 2.1 and 2.2. We do not cover 2.3, and jump to 3.1 after 2.2.
