Please visit this page regularly and frequently for updates and
announcements.
Grading:
The grade will consist of four elements: weekly homework (using MyMathLab),
weekly quizzes (First 15 minutes in discussion section), midterm, and final exam.
- Homework: 20 % (weekly, no grade will be dropped)
- Quizzes: 30 % (the lowest grade will be dropped)
- Midterm: 15 %
- Final: 35 %
Since the grade structure is flexible enough, there will be absolutely
no exceptions to this policy.
Midterm:
Our midterm exam will be held tentatively
in class on Monday, May 12.
The coverage is from Sec.11.1 to 11.9 (or up to 11.10 depending on our progress)
and from Sec.12.1 to 12.5.
A practice exam will be provided later.
Final:
Our final exam is
3:30pm-5:30pm, Tuesday, June 10 (the room will be announced later).
Note that the final exam is cumulative.
Calculators, Cell Phones:
Calculators are not necessary for this course and will not be allowed
on exams or quizzes. Neither will cell phones.
If you want a clock/watch during exams, bring one,
but you will NOT be allowed your cell phone
(use of cell phone during exam is grounds for a 0).
Homework:
Homework is assigned after every lecture to give you practice with the
material covered in the lectures and it will be done using
MyMathLab (information found on that link).
The due date of each homework set is one week after the assigned date.
More precisely, 11:59pm of Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays
for the problems assigned on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, respectively.
(Exceptions are the HW for the first lecture on March 31 (M) which is
combined with the HW for the second lecture on April 2 (W) and hence the
due date is 11:59pm of April 8 (T); Also, there will be no HW assignment for
the last week lectures, i.e., June 2nd and 4th.)
The homework assignments can be found online when you log into the
MyMathLab Course Compass. The course code for this course
is saito88015, you will need this number
when you register for MyMathLab. Follow the instructions
at MyMathLab Info. Even if you already have your MyMathLab account, please
check MyMathLab info page.
There are several computer labs on campus that have the necessary
plug-ins installed. These are:
- 75 Hutchison - 26 seats
- 1131 Meyer - 31 seats
- 177 MU Station - 29 seats
- 163 Shields - 21 seats
The homework, additional problems, and/or clarification of the concepts
covered by the current week will be discussed in your section and questions
will be taken.
NO LATE HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED!
The assigned homework problems are the minimum necessary to understand the
material in the course. Do the problems carefully. I would suggest that
you solve the problems on paper first and then transfer the results
to MyMathLab. This way, you can bring your papers to the office hours
if you have any questions on the homework problems.
MyMathLab allows you to attempt a problem 3 times and gives you feedback
along the way.
I strongly recommend that you do homework every day, not just before it is due.
MyMathLab Setup:
Go to the MyMathLab Info page for detailed setup information.
You are REQUIRED to set up a computer account to do the Homework.
Quizzes:
Except for the first week (Mar.30),
15 minute quizzes are given in the beginning of each discussion session.
Quizzes will cover the material from the lectures of the previous week.
Your TA will grade your solutions to the quizzes and return
them to you after one week.
Solutions:
Homework solutions are available via
MyMathLab.
Quiz solutions are available in PDF format
on the solutions page on Friday morning after the quiz.
