This quarter, we will read the following books, mainly Kress's
book on integral equations :
- Rainer Kress: Linear Integral Equations, 2nd Ed.,
Springer-Verlag, 1999.
- Kendall E. Atkinson: The Numerical Solution of Integral
Equations of the Second Kind, Cambridge Univ. Press, 1997.
Both books are now available in the textbook section (i.e.,
downstairs) at UCD bookstore.
Note also that we will not cover the beginning chapters of Kress's book
and I decided to substitute it by much more brief descriptions and
reviews in Chapter 1 of Atkinson's book. It is each reader's
responsibility to cover/review the appropriate concepts, definitions,
and theorems described in those early chapters if they are referred to
in his/her assigned chapter.
Jan. 9: Organizational Meeting
- Determine the meeting schedule, readers, chapter
assignment
Jan. 16 Noel Smith:
- Atkinson, Chapter 1: A Brief
Discussion of Integral Equations
Jan. 23: Allen Xue:
- Kress, Chapter 6: Potential Theory
Jan. 30: Jim Zhao:
- Kress, Chapter 7: Singular Integral Equations
Feb. 6: Brendan Farrell:
- Kress, Chapter 10: Operator Approximations
Feb. 13: Dan Rutherford
- Kress, Chapter 11: Degenerate Kernel Approximation
Feb. 20: Tim Kneezel
- Kress, Chapter 12: Quadrature Methods
Feb. 27: No Seminar (please attend Applied Math Seminar by
Ron Kimmel)
Mar. 5: Peng Li
- Kress, Chapter 13: Projection Methods
Mar. 12: Jiadong Xu
- Kress, Chapter 14: Iterative Solution and Stability
