Text

The text for the course is Thomas' Calculus: Early Transcendentals, 12th Edition by Weir/Hass (ISBN #978-0-321-58876-0). We will cover most of chapters 2, 3, and 4. Chapter 1 should be familiar.

Grading

There will be one midterm and a final exam. The final grade will be computed as follows.

Homework: 20%
Quizzes: 25%
Midterm (November 3): 20%
Final Exam: 35%

Homework

Homework will be assigned twice per week and is posted on the course website. There are two types of homework: WebWork homework and written homework. WebWork homework is a set of problems completed online (available at http://webwork.math.ucdavis.edu/webwork2/MAT21A-ORourke-Fall-2010/) and will be due before class every Tuesday and Friday. The problems online are automatically graded. Written homework is assigned twice per week with the WebWork homework, but written homework is not collected nor graded. It is important that you do the written homework in order to learn the material. For homework, calculators are allowed. You are welcome to discuss your homework with other students. However, the final product must be your own.

Quizzes

There will be a scheduled quiz every Tuesday and the occasional pop-quiz. The questions will be drawn from both the WebWork homework and the written homework assigned that week. You may not use any books, notes, or calculators on the quizzes.

Exam Policy

You may not use any books, notes, or cell phones on the exams. Legitimate excuses for missing an exam (such as verified illness or serious family emergencies) in all cases must be approved, preferably in advance. Unexcused absences from any exam will receive a score of "0".
