Assignments and Solutions
Homework
will be collected by 4:00 PM on the day it is due. You must turn in your homework to me either in class, or in
office hours. Please note that HW
turned in to the grader box will not be graded. Solutions for graded problems will be posted by the end of
each week. NO LATE HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED. The lowest HW score for each student
will be dropped.
Students are encouraged to
work in groups on homework assignments.
Hints for homework: If you
get stuck on a problem, first look back through the section and class notes
before giving up. Perhaps you will
find an example similar to your problem, or a definition that may help you.
Neatness Counts!! Your homework
assignments will be graded by a reader.
This person will grade the selected problems (chosen by me) for accuracy
(5 pts each), grade the entire assignment for completeness (5 pts if complete,
0 pts if not entirely complete), and also grade for
neatness/readability/organization (2 pts – discretion of reader). Neatness and presentation do
count! If you present your
problems in a clear and organized manner, you are far more likely to receive
full credit for your work. This
also applies to test-taking.
Extra Credit Opportunity: Students who visit
the calculus room for help before April 11, 2008 will receive +1% on their
final grade. This might be enough
to push ‘borderline’ students from the B+ range into A- range, for example. To prove you visited the calculus room,
have the graduate student who assisted you sign the front page of your HW next
to your name. I know all of the
graduate students, and I will check the authenticity of the signature. This signature MUST appear on either
the first or second HW assignment in order to receive extra credit.
There will be two
cumulative Midterms
on Wednesday April 23, 2008 and Friday May 16, 2008; 3:10 – 4:00 PM in Hart
1130.
The Final Exam will be given on Wednesday June 11,
2008, 8:00 – 10:00 AM in room Wellman 234.
Both midterms and the final
exam are cumulative. There will be NO MAKE-UP EXAMS. No calculators, cell phones, mp3 players, etc allowed on
exams.
There is no school on Monday May 26, 2008.
ACADEMIC DISHONESTY POLICY: Cheating on exams will not be tolerated. Students are expected to adhere to the
UCD Code of Academic Conduct at all times. If a student is suspected of
cheating, a letter will be written to Student Judicial Affairs and they will
handle the issue.
How to do well in this
class:
·
Come to
each class on time. (Did you know that the most important minutes in any class
are the first 5 minutes? When you
are late, you miss the most important part of the class!)
·
Do the
homework and turn it in on time (Why lose out on easy points? Let’s say it comes to the final grade,
and you are borderline between an A and a B, and you did not turn in all of
your HW…how are you going to feel?)
·
GO TO THE CALCULUS ROOM FOR
HELP! In MSB 3118.
·
Come to my office hours
·
Read
the sections in the book before and after class (Here is the basic
outline of topics we will cover each day)
·
Attend the Learning Skills
Center Workshop/Drop in hours/Tutoring (Link to the LSC info)
·
Study before midterms and exams
·
Spend at least 1 hour EACH DAY doing problems
from your book. (Yes, even
Saturday and Sunday!)

Notes: Please provide
me with essential information as soon as possible. Two examples of essential information are below:
1. Disabled
students who need a longer period of time for tests (as determined by the
Student Disability Center) should contact the instructor at the start of the
course. You will not be given
extra time if you present this information just before a test.
2. Students participating in an official
university athletic, musical, or similar event, which will cause them to miss
an exam, should contact the instructor as soon as they know of such a
scheduling conflict.
