There will also be "secondary" office hours, tentatively Wednesdays 3:20-4pm, (but occasionally 12:35-1:20) in 3224 MSB.
Since there is (for now) no class in 2 Wellman at 3pm, following each lecture, I'll stay behind to answer your questions. On Fridays, I'll stay longer, and on Wednesdays, I'll continue in my office. Update Oct 31 (Weds) OH are cancelled.

Final: Our final exam is  Monday, December 10 at 10:30am  in  2 Wellman
People taking two finals scheduled at that same time need to let me know by Nov 9. Please give me your name and SID and the conflicting course and instructor for that course. (Your other  exam will most likely then be at ?.)

Syllabus: The syllabus can be found on the official dept website.  A more detailed schedule should (maybe) be updated here.

Textbook: Thomas' Calculus Early Transcendental , by Weir, Hass, Giordano. 11th ed. Addison-Wesley.

Supplement : Student Solutions Guide,  Answers to almost all odd numbered exercises.

Course Outline: We will cover most of chapters 1-4.

Calculators: Calculators are not necessary for this course and will not be allowed on tests. Neither will cell phones nor iPods. If you want a clock/watch during exams, bring one, but you will NOT be allowed your cell phone. (Use of cell phone during exam is grounds for a 0.)

Tests: Calculators will not be allowed on the tests (nor cell phones).  Bring your student ID cards to all exams.

  • First Midterm: Monday, Oct 22  (note the drop deadline is Oct 24); Covers  Chapters 1,2 (all sections) and Section 3.1
  • Second Midterm: Monday, Nov 19; Covers tba [don't worry about tba]
  • Final: tba. Cumulative, but emphasizing integration methods, and material since the second midterm.   Monday, December 10 at 10:30am  in 2Wellman   People taking two finals scheduled at that same time need to let me know by March 9.
  • As always, you are responsible for the Academic Code of Conduct on exams.

Quizzes: There will be regular quizzes in section. Roughly 5 this quarter.  They will usually consist of one or two problems VERY similar to assigned homework problems.

Homework: Homework is assigned to give you practice with the material covered in the lectures.   Some homework will be assigned on MathLab.   You are REQUIRED to set up a computer account to do this homework.   Some homework will consist of written assignments, in addition to MyMathLab.   Your HW grade will be a combination of these two.   Written assignments will only  be collected at random in section, if/when the TA calls on you.  A few problems of a few students will be graded each week.  In an ideal world, every problem of every set would be graded carefully.  In the world of budget constraints and public universities, only a few selected problems will be graded each week, and even then, only part of the alphabet (by your last name) at a time.

The assigned homework problems are the minimum necessary to understand the material in the course. Do the problems carefully.
I may assign homework more often than once per week! Working on exercises should be something you do every few days, not racing through the night before the due date.  However, written assignments will only be collected weekly or every 2 weeks.

I strongly recommend that you do homework every day, not just before it is due.  Always bring it to section.
NO LATE HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED!.
Homework assignments are available on-line, and will be posted on the MyUcdavis Discussion Board and/or at My Math Lab. Homework solutions are here and on MyUCDavis.

Once grades are entered on MyUCDavis, please check your score is recorded correctly.  If it is incorrect, you have until three weeks after its due date alert us to the error.

Late adds: If  you add 21A late (the add deadline is Oct 12), you are still responsibe for all homework.  So if you are thinking of adding, do all HW.  If you transferred in from another section, you will need to import your grades over.  That is your responsibility to make sure it happens correctly.

Mathlab:  See this link for information on how to set up Mathlab.  READ the directions on how to enter your name (not just as First, Last)!!! This is the online component, included with the purchase of a new book. If you buy a used book, you will have to buy an access to My Math Lab separately. MyMathLab comes with an online text version of the textbook, so you might choose to buy just MyMathLab ISBN:032119991 (no hard copy of the book).
Students will have to register (with the access code from their My Math Lab kits/textbooks).
Register your MyMathLab coursework at MYCourseCompass with Course ID: vazirani41576

NEW: I will set up a "dummy" shared account for those of you who decided to not buy MyMathLab, but want to practice problems. These problems will NOT be graded and not contribute to your grade. Only one student can be logged in at a time. The login/password will NOT be public, but posted on the Discussion Board.

MyMathLab will work on any computer that (a) runs Windows (and Explore), (b) has MyMathLab plugins installed. This means that you can work with MyMathLab from your home desktop or a laptop. In addition, the following campus labs that are set up with My Math Lab:

Go to http://clm.ucdavis.edu/ to see the lab schedules.

NEW! From a student: hope for linux!
There are problems getting mymathlab to work on linux using open source tools like Mozilla. WINE allows you to run programs compiled for windows in the linux environment for some time, and this student recently found a version of internet explorer that runs through WINE. You can find it (along with fairly detailed instructions) at
    http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/page/Installation

    Grading:

  • Midterms: 45% total (as 20/25 or 25/20 depending on which is more favorable);
  • Final: 40%
  • Homework and quizzes: 15%;   (One lowest quiz  grade will be dropped; and some HW grade will be from MyMathLab)
  • Other resources: Calculus information of all types at calculus.org.
