August 5-9, 1996
University of California, Davis
Main Speaker
J. Hyam Rubinstein (Melbourne University)
Additional Speakers
W. Jaco (Oklahoma State University)
Abigail Thompson (UC Davis)
The purpose of this conference is to expose recent developments in the theory of normal and almost normal surfaces, and their contribution to such problems as the recognition problem for the 3-sphere and the classification of group actions on 3-manifolds.
All members of the mathematical community are welcome to attend. There are no registration fees.
Warning! Davis in August can be extremely hot, though dry. Temperatures often reach 105 degrees. Bring sunscreen, swimsuits, and headgear. Evenings will generally be quite cool, so you will need sweaters as well.
To help defray the cost of travel, room and board, some funding is available for a limited number of participants. Graduate students and mathematicians at the beginning of their careers are encouraged to apply. Click here to access a Response Form which will act both as an application for funding and as an indication of participation. Please return the completed form as soon as possible, and not later than April 1st, 1996 for preference with funding. Applications received after April 1 will be considered for funding as available. We will be glad to help with local arrangments if requested. Please complete the application form to let us know you are coming and order appropriate amounts of coffee even if you are not requesting funding.
