Textbook and Online Homework:  This course is participating in the UC Davis Inclusive Access program.  The textbook is Thomas' Calculus, ET, 14th edition. An online version of the book is included through Inclusive Access, so you do not need to buy a physical textbook, though you can if you find it helpful. The Mathematics Department syllabus indicating chapters to be covered can be found in 21C Syllabus but note that we will be using the 14th Edition of the textbook.

  • Discounted access to MyMathLab used for this class is billed through the UC Davis Inclusive Access program after the final drop date. You access MyMathLab through Canvas.  Note the you must sign up for Inclusive Access to do the online homework.
    • PLEASE NOTE: If you were already billed in a previous MAT 21 course for series access to MyMathLab for Thomas’ Calculus, your access will continue and you will not be rebilled.
    • If you previously opted out of the access in your prior MAT 21 courses, you will need to opt in via the Inclusive Access portal to access the content for this course.
  • Please watch for an email to your UC Davis email address from no-reply@verbasoftware.com before the beginning of the term for billing info and your Inclusive Access portal link.
  • If you cannot locate the email, you can have the portal link re-sent at https://portal.verba.io/davis/login
  • To access the coursework and text click on any MyLab and Mastering link in your Canvas page.
  • For an FAQ page for Inclusive Access go to http://inclusiveaccess.ucdavis.edu
  • For questions about the Inclusive Access program email the student-run help desk: inclusiveaccess@ucdavis.edu
  •  Important: Please access MyMathLab only via your Canvas page.  Otherwise you may not get credit for your work.
  • We will cover the following sections from the 14th Edition of Thomas' Calculus, ET: 10.1-10.10, 12.1-12.5, 13.1-13.2, 14.1-14.8.  This is a lot of material and not all of it will be covered in classroom lectures.  The lectures will include the key ideas and concepts. You will need to read the textbook sections listed here in order to master the material.

Grading Policy

1. HW (20%)  There will be a weekly homework assignment, generally due Monday at noon. The homework will be assigned and graded online through the MyLab system. Your lowest homework score will be dropped.

2. Midterm Exam (30%)  There will be one midterm exam on Wednesday, May 15 in class.

3. Final Exam (50%) The Final Exam will be held on Thursday, June 13, 1:00-3:00 PM. Location to be announced.  A sample final exam can be found here.

4. Quizzes (0%) The last ten minutes of each discussion section will be a non-graded quiz.  The answers to the quiz problems will be on the back of the page.  The purpose is to give you practice in writing out solutions to problems and to see how well you understand the material.  The examination problems will be similar to the quiz problems.

Depending on the difficulty of the exams, a curve will be applied.  Students are expected to work alone on exams. The use of calculators, notes, or books during exams is not allowed. See the UC Davis Code of Academic Conduct.

Help & Suggestions:

  • The Calculus Room has Teaching Assistants available to answer questions for students taking MAT 21ABCD. Located in the ground floor of the Mathematical Science Building (MSB 1118), the Calculus Room is staffed with 21ABCD TAs from 1-7 PM Monday to Friday.

  • The TAs for this course will be available for help and consultation during their Calculus Room hours and in office hours to be posted.

  • There is a calculus software product called Sage. This is as powerful as expensive software such as Mathematica and Maple. Sage is fairly easy to learn and free. It can be help find many of the solutions to the homework problems.  Also worth a look is an online website called WolframAlpha, which can carry out many calculus operations.

  • The Student Academic Success Center, located on the second floor of Dutton Hall, offers many services for students in mathematics courses. These include workshops for some calculus topics, drop-in tutoring, self-paced programs, and an exam file containing past exams.

  • A list of tutors available for hire is maintained by the Student Services Office on the department’s website.

  • Advising services are available through the First Resort, the Mathematics Academic Peer Advisor, and academic counselors in the Deans’ offices.
