MAT 280: Geometric Group Theory.

TR, 10:30-11:50 AM.  MSB, 3106.  First lecture: March 31.

CRN for this class is: 79986

Broadly speaking, geometric group theory deals with interaction of algebraic and geometric properties of groups. In this  class I will cover basics of hyperbolic groups and Rips theory of group actions on trees with applications in the geometric group theory. The prerequisites for this class are basic group theory and algebraic topology (fundamental groups and covering spaces). Knowledge of differential topology (MAT-239) and differential geometry (MAT-240) will be useful but not required.

There will be no homework and no tests; however, I will record the attendence.

There is no textbook. Feel free to download:

1. M. Kapovich "Lectures on Geometric Group Theory"

2. J.Vaisala "Lectures on Gromov-Hyperbolic Spaces"

3. Notes on Rips Machine

4. B. Bowditch "Course in Geometric Group Theory"

5. P. Papasoglu "Lectures on Hyperbolic Groups"
