Maria Gillespie - UC Davis

"God created infinity, and man, unable to understand infinity, had to invent finite sets." --Gian-Carlo Rota

About Me

I am Maria Gillespie, formerly Maria Monks. I have recently received my Ph.D. from UC Berkeley, advised by Mark Haiman. I am currently an NSF postdoctoral fellow at UC Davis.

My current interests may be classified under algebraic combinatorics, specifically regarding symmetric function theory and its connections with geometry and representation theory. Perhaps more accurately, I spend my days playing with numbers and other symbols written in partition diagrams. It's amazing how much you can understand via little partial grids of numbers in boxes.

As an illustration of my area of research, as well as a directory for this website, the menu at the upper left is a Young tableau. Feel free to conjugate it any time you wish.
