Text: Biggs N. Discrete Mathematics, Oxford Univ Press, Oxford, second edition, 2002.

Description: This course is intended to provide the basics in Abstract Algebra with an emphasis on applications.
We shall study Modular Arithmetic (chap. 13), the theory of Groups (chap. 20), and Rings and Fields (chaps. 22 and 23).
Then we proceed to study applications to Error-Correcting Codes (chap 24), and additional topics if time permits.

Grading policy: The course grade will be based on quizzes (10 points), one midterm exam (30 pts) and the final exam (60 points). The quizzes and exams will be closed-book and closed-note. There will be no make-up exams. Quizzes will take place on Tuesdays in the discussion section, and will be based on past homework. There will be quizzes on January 15, 22 and 29, February 5 and 19, and March 5 and 12. The final exam will be comprehensive. 

MIDTERM INFORMATION: The midterm will be Wednesday February 13 from 3:10 - 4:00PM in Cruess 107.

The midterm will cover sections 13.1 - 13.3, 20.1 - 20.9, 22.1 - 22.8, and 23.1 - 23.2 of the text.

FINAL EXAM INFORMATION: The final exam will be Friday March 22 from 1:00 - 3:00PM in Cruess 107.

The final exam will cover sections 13.1 - 13.3, 20.1 - 20.9, 22.1 - 22.8, 23.1 - 23.4, 23.9, and 24.1 - 24.6 of the text.
