Faculty keeps success in Extramural Research and Educational Grants

The Mathematics Faculty brings a large number of scientific and educational research grants to the campus.

Because of the nature of research, the typical size of a scientific research grant in mathematics is small compared to experimental sciences, and the competition among mathematicians is extremely high.

About 63% of all the mathematics faculty have received extramural grants (including research fellowships) during 1995, and the total over $1.2 million (excluding fellowships) have been awarded during the annual funding cycle that has ending date in this calendar year. It is a considerable success of the Davis faculty, because a recent survey shows that even among the top 30 U.S. research universities, in average a much smaller percentage of faculty receives extramural grants.

In the following list, (E) indicates an educational research grant and (F) a research fellowship. All others are scientific research grants.

In addition to these individual research grants, Professors Hass, Hunter, Puckett and Tracy have a joint NSF grant for Scientific Computational Research Environment.
