Undergraduate Students receive Departmental Honors

The University awarded 48 students a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics during the academic year 1994-95. The unusually high academic qualifications of the graduating class of mathematics seniors last year resulted in the highest number of departmental citations ever given in any year. The following five received this prestigious award: Kristina Dance, Nancy Heinschel, Virginia Johnson, Leslie Levine, and Matthew Nelsen.

It should be noted that four of these five were women and that one of them, Virginia Johnson, graduated after celebrating her 18th birthday less than a month before graduation. Her remarkable achievement - leaving her poverty-stricken Sacramento home, never attending a single day of high school, receiving encouragement from those who helped her after she left home - was the subject of feature articles in several local newspapers. In addition, Brandoch Calef and Nancy Heinschel graduated with highest honors.

The winners of the 1995 Undergraduate Mathematics Contest were Matthew Nelsen (first prize), Bradley Ballinger and Brandoch Calef (tied for second prize), and Hien Bui (third prize). This is the second year in a row that Matthew Nelsen was a first prize winner in this contest. Congratulations to them all! (H.A.)
