Course Objective:
-
To be able to solve certain linear and nonlinear differential equations
-
To be able to describe the behavior of the solution to differential equations
-
To understand the importance of mathematical modeling of certain natural
phenomena describable by differential equations
Text:
W. E. Boyce and R. C. DiPrima, "Elementary Differential Equations," Seventh
Edition, John Wiley & Sons, 2000; this
is a required textbook.
We will cover the following sections of this book:
1.1-1.3, 2.1-2.8, 3.1-3.7, 6.1-6.2, 7.1-7.9.
Prerequisite:

a grade of D or better.
Attendance:
Regular attendance to the lectures is strongly advised. Neither
eating nor disturbing the lectures/the other students is allowed.
Class Web Page:
Grading Scheme:
20% Homework, 20% Midterm #1, 20% Midterm #2, 40% Final Exam.
Final grade will be based on relative class performance, not
the absolute scores of homeworks and exams.
Midterm Exams:
There will be two midterm exams (MT) as follows:
MT1: Wednesday, January 31st in class (9:00am-9:50am)
MT2: Wednesday, February 21st in class (9:00am-9:50am)
Final Exam:
The final exam will be held on Wednesday, March 21st from 1:30pm to 3:30pm
at the same room 126 Wellman.
Exam Policy:
There will be NO MAKE-UP EXAMS for Midterms and Final. If you miss
exams due to unavoidable circumstances such as serious illness of yourself
or death in your family, you must provide me with a written proof and document.
Then I will adjust the weights to the exams you actually took to make the
sum of the weights 100%.

Note that you are NOT allowed to use calculators (including palm/laptop computers) in any exam in this course.
Homework:
I will assign homework every Friday. Its due date is the following
Friday. In principle, I will collect the homework at the beginning of the
Friday lecture. If you cannot attend the Friday lecture for some reason,
then you can drop your homework at my office (675 Kerr) or at my mail box
(5th floor Kerr) BEFORE the Friday lecture. If you wish, you can submit
your homework at the Wednesday lecture prior to the deadline. LATE HOMEWORK
WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. A subset of these problems will be graded. The graded
homework will be returned to the homework boxes located in the basement
of Wellman Hall by the following Friday. The homework that is not picked
up at the end of this quarter will be discarded. So, please pick them up
as soon as possible. I will post the solution to each homework on the web
as pdf files after my Friday lecture.
Please staple your papers. Put your name, assignment number, and due
date in the right hand corner of each page. Present your homework neatly.
If the reader cannot read your writing, it may be marked wrong.
I will strongly recommend to work on the homework problems daily, not
just the night before it is due.
