Course description

This is a graduate course in algebraic topology. We will discuss homotopy, the fundamental group, covering spaces, and higher homotopy groups.

Exams

  • Midterm due Friday November 8 in class
  • Final Exam Saturday December 7 11am-2pm
  • Prerequisites

This is a graduate course in Topology. You must be fluent with point set topology at the level of MAT 147. If you are an undergraduate student and have not taken MAT 147, you will not be admitted into this course. Most students will have taken graduate level math courses previously.

    Course instructor: Laura Starkston

    Texts

We will primarily follow Hatcher's Algebraic Topology Chapter 0,1, and parts of Chapter 4.

Another reference for the course is Homotopical Topology by Fomenko and Fuchs, (Introduction and Chapter 1 lectures).

    Exams

There will be one take-home midterm half way through the quarter and one take-home final at the end of the quarter. The lengths will be comparable to a homework set, but for these you will not be able to consult with your peers.

The take-home midterm will begin after class Friday November 1. You will have 5 days to complete it.
