Course lecture notes

Homework

  • Recommended HW for week 1: problems 1-7 in the lecture notes
  • Recommended HW for week 2: problems 8-13 in the lecture notes
  • Recommended HW for week 3: problems 14, 15, 16 in the lecture notes and exercises 7, 14, 15 and 25 from Chapter 1 of the Stein-Shakarchi textbook
  • Required HW for week 4: problems 18, 19, 20, 21 in the lecture notes and exercises 1, 2, 3, 10 from Chapter 2 of the textbook (pages 64, 66). Optional problems: problem 23 in the lecture notes; exercises 11-12 in Stein-Shakarchi, page 66 (strongly recommended for aspiring analysts).
I will collect this HW assignment for grading (see the course grading policy). Please submit it in person or over email by Monday 2/10 at 5 pm.
  • Recommended HW for week 5: problems 25, 27, 28, 29, 30 in the lecture notes. As a fun extra, read up on Sendov's conjecture and prove the conjecture for quadratic polynomials. If you also figure out a proof for cubic polynomials or find a good writeup of such a proof, I'd like to see it.
  • Required HW for week 6: for this homework assignment, solve problems 24, 26 and 31 in the lecture notes, and solve any 2-3 problems of your choice in Chapters 1-3 of the textbook (including any of the ones previously assigned, except those included in the first required assignment). This is the second HW assignment I will collect for grading per the course grading policy. It is due by Monday 2/24 at 5 pm.
  • Recommended HW for week 7: problems 32-37 in the lecture notes.
  • Recommended HW for week 8: problems 38-43 in the lecture notes.
  • Recommended HW for week 9: problems 44-45 in the lecture notes, and the questions in the past final exams I posted on Canvas.
