Prerequisite: | You must have taken or take Eng 6 or 22AL. |
Problem Sets: | There are FIVE types of homeworks --
(i) SKILLS, (ii) IDEAS, (iii) READING, (iv) CLASS PARTICIPATION (optional extra credit) and (v) CONTENT CREATION (optional extra credit). The SKILLS homeworks use the WEBWORK system. These problem sets have a weekly Friday deadline. The IDEAS homeworks are available and submitted electronically at SMARTSITE They are due at the beginning of every class but only graded every third Monday. The READING homeworks appear throughout the lecture notes and require you to answer simple comprehension based multiple choice questions using webwork. They are due AT THE BEGINNING OF THE NEXT LECTURE. NO LATE HOMEWORKS ARE ACCEPTED. Written homeworks will be graded both for correctness AND quality of presentation. COLLECT YOUR HOMEWORK 1 HERE COLLECT YOUR HOMEWORK 2 HERE CLASS PARTICIPATION extra credit can be earned using CLICKERS (available at the bookstore, first or secondhand plus at various other commerical outlets--SHOP AROUND!) during lectures. CONTENT CREATION:there will be two opportunities to submit ANY content that you believe could improve the course and help other students. This is completely optional and for extra credit only. Exams: | Two midterms and one final.
Midterm I, Friday February 3, in class. Solutions Midterm II, Wednesday February 29, in class. Solutions COMPREHENSIVE Final Exam, Thursday March 22, 8:30pm. SCILEC 123, NOT GIEDT Sample midterm and final problems and solutions are at the end of the Lecture Notes. NO calculators, cell-phones, telescopes or satellite dishes in any exam. Don't cheat -- enrolling in this class implies a commitment to academic honesty. If you have any difficulties (flat tire, broken alarm clock, anxiety attack...) concerning the final or midterm exams, contact me immediately. |
Grading: | 20% webwork problem sets, 20% written homeworks, 20% midterms and 40% final exam.
Grading scheme: grades will be curved but the following are guaranteed: >80% total points A, >70% at least B, >60% at least C, >50% at least D |
