MATH 16C-001: SHORT CALCULUS (Winter 2020).

Course materials

Midterm 1 information: Time and place: Wed., Feb. 5, in class. Bring a pencil and your university ID!
Here is the list of topics it covers. Differential equations: general and particular solution, separation of variables, linear differential equations, applied problems (in which the rates of change are described in words). Three dimensions: coordinates system in three dimensions (axes, coordinate planes), distances and spheres, planes, traces, domains and level curves of functions of two variables. These are the topics of first 4 homework assignments. There will be 3 differential equations problems on the exam (one of which will be applied) and 1 problem on surfaces in 3 dimensions.

For practice, solve the practice Midterm 1. (For solutions, the first four problems are from sample Midterm 1 and the last three problems are problems 3, 4a, 5 from Kouba's sample exam solved here.) Try to make your own problems by modifying examples from lecture and problems from the practice exam. Assigned homework problems are also good practice.

Midterm 2 information: Time and place: Wed., Mar. 4, in class. Bring a pencil and your university ID!
Here is the list of topics it covers. Partial derivatives, critical points, second derivative test, Lagrange multipliers, word problems on maxima and minima, double integrals (setting up and computing in either order), volumes, average values, limits of sequences, convergence of series and sum of geometric series. These are the topics of homework assignments 5 to 8. There will be 2 problems on critical points and extrema of functions of several variables, one problem on double integrals, and one problem on sequences and series.

For practice, solve the practice Midterm 2. (For solutions, the first four problems are from sample Midterm 1 and the last three problems are problems 4, 5 (a bit different), 6 from Kouba's sample exam solved here.) Try to make your own problems by modifying examples from lecture and problems from the practice exam. Assigned homework problems are also good practice.
