Piazza

This term we will be using Piazza for class discussion.
Find our class page at: MAT 145 Piazza

You are welcome to communicate with each other and discuss class-related topics here. Please refrain from discussing other classes or personal topics.

Piazza is not a replacement for office hours: James and I may monitor Piazza from time to time, but not regularly. If you have a question to the instructors, please attend office hours on Zoom or write an email.

Code of Academic Conduct

The Code of Academic Conduct exists to support high standards of behavior and to ensure fair evaluation of student learning. Students who violate the Code of Academic Conduct are subject to disciplinary sanctions that include censure, probation, suspension, deferred separation or dismissal from the University of California. The code can be found at this link , or here . Cheating will be taken extremely seriously, and will be referred to Student Judicial Affairs.

In particular, it is OK to discuss homework problems with others, but you have to write the solutions in your own words . You cannot copy solutions from other students, books or the Internet.

For the midterms and the final, you are not allowed to discuss problems with anyone else or search the Internet. It follows exactly the same rules as the in class exam. If we observe that your solutions match someone else's or some Internet resource, your exam grade will be annuled.

Important: every student in MAT 145 should read Code of Academic Conduct . You should write the following text on a piece of paper:

"I have read and understood UC Davis Code of Academic Conduct"

Date and sign it with your name and student ID and upload to Gradescope.

Textbook

The textbook for the course is "Discrete Mathematics" by Lovasz, Pelikan, and Vesztergombi.

You should be able to access the e-book online by going to library.ucdavis.edu. The library uses a VPN client called "Pulse Secure". Instructions on use can be found here here . Once you connected by VPN, you can search for the book in the library catalogue.

Academic Participation Requirements

In September 2018 the campus will require students to verify that they have begun each course for which they are registered via the Academic Participation program. This program also encourages students to acknowledge their responsibilities regarding academic integrity and the Code of Academic Conduct, reinforcing our campus culture of honesty.

MyUCDavis will notify students online and through email on the first day of instruction to complete their Academic Participation verification no later than the quarter add deadline. Failing to verify academic participation by this deadline may result in a reduction of the financial aid award.

Please see more details by this link .

Homework

We will use Gradescope for homework assignments. You should be able to access Gradescope directly from Canvas. More information on Gradescope for students: link

The homework will be assigned every week on Mondays, and it will be due the following Monday before the start of the class. It must be legible, and written in connected sentences that explains what you are doing. Just the answer (whether correct or not) is not enough. Please put your name on every page and upload to Gradescope. Homework should be handed in on time, late homework will not be graded.

Though it is fine to discuss the HW problems with others, you must always write up the solutions in your own words. Copying will be penalized. Of course, in the exams you must work on your own: no calculators, textbooks etc will be allowed.
