A Localized Band-Limited Basis in Two Dimensions and Image Representation

A mathematical framework based on band-limited functions has been developed for modeling and analyzing images in two dimensions. The foundation of this framework is a class of basis functions that are simultaneously concentrated in both frequency and spatial domains. Images represented in such bases are visually smooth with neither ringing nor blocky artifacts which frequently accompany images represented in other basis, and at the same time preserve the original sharpness. The effectiveness of this representation framework will be demonstrated via examples in image denoising.
