Discrete time growth models arise naturally in physics and biology. I will introduce two simple discrete time growth models - the branching process and oriented percolation - and show that their survival probabilities become nonzero at nontrivial values of their growth parameters. The proofs that I will present require very little probability theory, and should be accessible to a wide audience.
