An introduction to KLR algebras and their representation theory

In the last decade, Khovanov and Lauda and independently Rouquier, invented a family of graded algebras called KLR algebras to categorify quantum groups. These algebras can be defined geometrically, via braid-like plane diagrams which consist of interacting strings labelled by vertices of a graph. In this talk I will introduce the concept of categorification, and after giving a flavor of the diagrammatics of KLR algebras, will give an overview of how they can be used to categorify quantum groups.
