Mathematical physics is an interesting subject of study which uses many tools from elsewhere as they are applicable. In addition, the topics initiated by mathematical physicists have inspired deep problems for probability theory. But mathematical physics also contributes tools to solve problems that probabilists have considered classically. An example is concentration of measure bounds, where a simple technique due to Aida and Stroock relies on spectral gap bounds for complicated Markov chains (such as MCMC). The martingale method bounds perfected for quantum spin systems by Nachtergaele are a key tool for proceeding with this method for problems of current interest.
