Heegaard Floer homology is an invariant for closed three-manifolds defined using ideas from symplectic geometry. I will describe a one lower-dimensional analogue, which associates a differential graded algebra to a surface, and a module to a three-manifold with boundary. Closed three-manifold invariants can be reconstructed using a "pairing theorem" for these invariants. This is on-going research with Robert Lipshitz and Dylan Thurston.
