A fusion category is a type of tensor category which generalizes the category of representations of a finite group. Most well-known examples come from groups, quantum groups, and conformal field theory. However, there are certain examples which arise from the theory of subfactors which do not yet fit into well-understood families. I will discuss the ongoing program to classify fusion categories and to search for exotic examples.
