The JSJ decomposition of 3-manifolds

I will discuss the torus decomposition of 3-manifolds, touching on the full JSJ decomposition if time permits. I will discuss an approach to the JSJ decomposition which naturally arises from more recent algebraic work by myself and Swarup. But I will be talking about classical ideas in 3-manifold topology, which are not directly related to group theory nor to geometric structures.
