Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for Solving Flow and Transport Problems

There is a need for efficient and accurate algorithms for simulating the flow and transport of species through a porous medium on general geometries. Recently, Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) methods have received much attention from the finite element community, and several schemes have been introduced and analyzed for elliptic and parabolic equations in the last five years. Besides the local mass conservation, discontinuous finite element methods can handle unstructured and irregular grids, full tensor coefficients, and also can easily take full advantage of the hp adaptivity techniques. In this talk, two DG methods are presented: the Baumann-Oden-Babuska scheme and the Non-symmetric Interior Penalty Galerkin (NIPG) method. Three subsurface applications are considered: single phase flow (elliptic equation), linear transport (convection-dominated parabolic equation) and multiphase flow (coupled system of nonlinear PDEs). Theoretical results and numerical simulations are given.
