The Path Integral and Feynman Diagrams

Student-Run Research Seminar

Speaker: Karl Hallowell, UC Davis
Location: 693 Kerr
Start time: Wed, May 25 2005, 12:10PM

The Feynman path integral is a key tool in the subject of quantum field theory (often just called "QFT"). Not only does it appear in physical theories that attempt to describe reality, but it is helpful in constructing interesting topological invariants and as an unusual application of integration. We first explore how to derive the Feynman path integral, particularly its formulation in terms of quantum field theory, then discuss the handy shortcut of Feynman diagrams. As you will see, this area touches upon much of mathematics, and hopefully you will take with you a new sense of the value and vitality of this subject.
