The mapping class group of a Heegaard Splitting

Given a Heegaard splitting of a 3-manifold, the mapping class group of the splitting is the group of automorphisms of the 3-manifold that bring the Heegaard surface back onto itself. We will discuss ways of ``calculating'' this group via algebra and geometry and discuss two recent results in the area.
