Heegard-Floer homology part 1: The philosophy of Floer theory

Special Events

Speaker: Dan Rutherford, UC Davis
Location: 3106 MSB
Start time: Mon, Apr 30 2007, 11:00AM

This will be the first of two talks on Oszvath and Szabo's invariant for 3-manifolds and knots which they have dubbed Heegard-Floer homology. The aim of this first talk will be to give a sense of where the invariants come. To begin I will discuss finite dimensional Morse theory and give a sketch of Lagrangian Floer homology. The definition of the simplest of the Heegard-Floer 3-manifold invariants is the goal for the end of this talk.
