In this talk I review mirror symmetry for compact Calabi-Yau geometries. From a physics point of view closed-string mirror symmetry is a duality, which computes closed-string worldsheet instanton corrections of the associated low energy effective field theory. In mathematics these instantons correspond to closed Gromov-Witten invariants. Then I discuss the recent progress in studying open-string mirror symmetry for compact Calabi-Yau geometries with D-branes. I argue that also in the open-string sector mirror symmetry provides for a tool to compute certain open-string worldsheet instanton corrections. These open-string corrections are associated to open Gromov-Witten invariants in compact Calabi-Yau geometries.
