Modeling Vehicular Traffic Flow

Student-Run Research Seminar

Speaker: Michael Zhang and Martha Shott, UCD Civil and Environmental Engineering & Institute of Transportation Studies
Location: 3106 MSB
Start time: Wed, May 5 2010, 12:10PM

The study of vehicular traffic presents some interesting and challenging mathematical problems that span the field of dynamical systems, optimization and control theory, and partial differential equations. In this talk, we discuss some traffic flow phenomena and mathematical models to describe them, and show by examples how traffic oscillations (stop-and-go) can be explained by a variety of models
