Air effects in drop impact dynamics

PDE and Applied Math Seminar

Drop impacts are ubiquitous in many processes, ranging from ink-jet printing to combustion, particles dissemination or rain drop erosion for instance. Despite this wide range of applications, the dynamics of drop impacts remains poorly understood, in particular, when splashing occurs. Recently the influence of the surrounding gas (often neglected) has been exhibited in experiments on solid surface. I will discuss in the seminar the role of the surrounding gas in drop impact for the two different situations of impact on solid surfaces and on thin liquid films. I will focus in particular in the entrapment of a gas bubble at the impact and on its influence on the splashing dynamics.
