A dynamical reinterpretation of the $L^2$ conservation law for the Korteweg-de Vries equation, obtained in collaboration with M. Keel, G. Staffilani, H. Takaoka and T. Tao, has led to a new method for showing global wellposedness of nonlinear Hamiltonian PDE. The talk will describe a procedure for generating almost conserved quantities using multilinear harmonic analysis and the local wellposedness machinery developed in the last decade.
