Random Matrices and Surface Gluings

Student-Run Research Seminar

Speaker: Emily Redelmeier
Location: 2112 MSB
Start time: Fri, Jun 5 2015, 12:10PM

I will talk about connections between random matrices and surface gluings. I will discuss how combinatorial and topological techniques are useful in particular in multi-matrix and large-matrix problems, for example in connection with free (noncommutative) probability. I will discuss the differences between real and complex matrices (non-orientable surfaces appear in the real case), and take a look at some surprises in the multi-matrix quaternionic case.
