[Ph.D. Exit Seminar] Single and Multispecies Persistence in the Face of Environmental Fluctuations

Mathematical Biology

Speaker: Will Cuello, UC Davis
Location: 2112 MSB
Start time: Mon, May 13 2019, 3:10PM

For this seminar, I’ll present my work on the analyses of multispecies systems in fluctuating environments. For the more numerical and data-driven part of the presentation, I’ll show my results in predicting bet-hedging strategies (or germination rates) of 10 Sonoran Desert annuals, where the necessity of bet-hedging follows from uncertain amounts of rainfall in the desert. Time permitting, I’ll speak on possible extinction risks of these desert annuals in changing precipitation regimes. Finally, I’ll present work I’ve done in a more theory-based project; here, I’ve developed a mathematical framework for analyzing classes of multispecies, stochastic models to determine whether they can stochastically persist with one-another in the long-term.
