In this talk, I will give a brief overview of the current progress on questions related to Hilbert's sixth problem. In particular, I will discuss the rigorous derivation of effective kinetic and nonlinear PDEs from many particle systems in statistical and quantum mechanics. Starting from the underlying dynamics given by Schrödinger's equation and Newton's equations of motion, one can prove that PDEs such as Boltzmann's equation and non-linear Schrödinger are effective theories to describe a large number of interacting particles. I will also speak briefly about my current work in deriving effective equations for mixtures of classical and quantum gases.
