Construction of Self-Similar Shocks for Perturbations of Burgers Equation

Student-Run Research Seminar

Speaker: Kyle Chickering
Location: 2112 MSB
Start time: Thu, Oct 21 2021, 11:00AM

We discuss some recent results in shock formation for perturbations of Burgers equations. In particular, we have constructed solutions which break down in finite time, forming a $C^{1/3}$ gradient discontinuity, or pre-shock. We are able to obtain the precise asymptotic behavior of these solutions as they blow-up.

In this talk we will focus on the machinery underlying these exciting new results: shock formation, self-similarity, and modulation. The talk is intended for a general mathematical audience at the graduate level.

... and I will have some photos and videos.
