I will explain recently (and less recently) uncovered connections between invariant distributions on $GL_n$ over a non-archimedean local field, symmetric functions, and knot invariants of HOMFLY type. In particular, I will discuss orbital integrals of tamely ramified elements and their Shalika germ expansions. Partly based on joint work with Cheng-Chiang Tsai.
