From tensor decomposition to slicing determinantal varieties

Student-Run Research Seminar

Speaker: Tait Weicht, UC Davis
Location: 3106 MSB
Start time: Wed, Jan 24 2024, 1:10PM

I will be sharing some clever algorithms and useful techniques that I’ve learned in the course of a research project. Motivated by projected multi-reference alignment, the inverse problem I am studying, we will cover a well-known method for decomposing 3rd order tensors before going on to a more specialized method for how to solve linear systems with solutions that have a canonical polyadic decomposition. While these algorithms have deeper theoretical underpinnings in algebraic geometry, this talk will mostly focus on how to do the computations and the applications of these methods.
